Understanding the Economic Crisis and the Impact on Women’s Lives

Understanding the link between macroeconomic policies and the ongoing economic crisis

19th October 2022

By For Equality

We know the world has been hit by a series of crises, from the Global pandemic, and devastating climate-related events, the Ukraine-Russia crisis, to the economic crises, and with every crisis, women and girls are the most affected, and now more than ever, we need a response, driven by lived experiences, a response that centers Women and girls’ needs.

Local food and fuel prices have more than triple in some of the world’s most at-risk communities: A recent research survey by ActionAid finds that at the local community level, food and fuel price hikes are far outstripping already record-breaking rises globally*, suggesting the Ukraine war has exacerbated ongoing food and fuel price challenges in communities most impacted by the climate crisis, humanitarian emergencies, and political and economic turmoil; therefore calling for urgent response mechanisms and alternatives.

With this background, For Equality, through The Response platform invited key experts in the field to discuss and understand the direct impact of the cost of living crisis has on the lives of women and girls, and an opportunity for presentation of feminist alternatives as key solutions to alleviate the crisis.

The discussions were segmented to include The Response Podcast series on the Cost of Living crisis, specifically covering three topics; an analytical presentation of the macro-economic effects, gaps and opportunities; Austerity, Neoliberalism and the IFI Link, and Feminist Alternatives.

The podcast series being a prelude to a two Part Webinar series bringing together Feminist economists and Representatives from the Government to further contextualize and understand the characteristics of macroeconomic policies, key stakeholders and stating recommendations and solutions.

The dialogues form part of the collaborative work For Equality is implementing with member partners of the Feminist Macroeconomics Alliance Malawi (FEAM).
