#SheActs4Feminomics
25th September 2022
By For Equality
For Equality in early 2022 received support from Urgent Action Fund to ‘strengthen feminist coordination for accountability on Malawi economic justice and Generation Equality Forum Malawi commitments. The initiative dwelled on the production of tools and resources such an accountability framework, reporting template and community scorecard. Although the tools were developed, the success was determined by continued engagements with CSOs and communities to operationalize the tools, which was a challenge due to financial bottlenecks.
During the course of the initiative, For Equality learnt that, although strengthening accountability on the commitments is an equally important effort, there is a larger macro-level environment that most Women’s Rights Organizations have side-lined macro-level policy advocacy in their programming, mainly due to inadequate understanding of the role that macro-level policies play in influencing the micro-level environment. Hence, many WROs tend to focus solely on micro-level interventions in their communities.
However, studies have shown that macro-level policies shape the lived realities of women and girls, unfortunately in devastating ways due to systems such as neoliberalism and patriarchy. Therefore, these systems also play a role in determining whether individual governments can truly deliver on their GEF commitments or any commitments for that fact. Hence, FE and all partners in this proposed initiative will make use of lessons learnt in the previous project to address macro-level policies and their role in shaping policies that impact women’s economic justice and rights, to achieve greater impact.
Against this background, For Equality, with support from UAF is implementing the #SheActs4Feminomics Project, which aims to build and maintain a knowledge base on the macro-level policy environment and its impacts on economic justice with a focus on women owned SMEs, land and labour rights
The project leverages the power of collective campaigning to place this issue at the centre of public discourse.; and brings on board key partners including the Malawi Human Rights Resource Center, The National Association of Business Women (NABW), Coalition for the Empowerment of Women and Girls (CEWAG), and Chikulamayembe Women Forum
