Raising Awareness on the Impact of Macro-level Economic Policies on women’s lives in Malawi

Raising Awareness on the Impact of Macro-level Economic Policies on women’s lives in Malawi

30th September 2022

By For Equality

Macro-level economic policies include decisions on tax, government spending, trade, investment, and debt policies, and women’s paid and unpaid work – affecting every aspect of people’s lives. Yet citizens, especially women and girls who are disproportionately affected, lack the understanding and capacity to challenge orthodox macroeconomic policies and hold governments accountable for their policies.

With support from the African Union Civic Tech Fund, For Equality sought to strengthen democratic governance by democratizing access to macroeconomic policy information and simplifying it for citizens to understand.

The project’s core work was centred on knowledge development and dissemination through the Feminist Macroeconomics Alliance Malawi website, the development of a USSD platform and a tailored digital media campaign that included the development of explainer factsheets, videos and podcasts through The Response Platform.

The Website is also a key platform for sharing activities as implemented by the Alliance, and partners around Macroeconomics, as well as providing easy access to the virtual classroom for the Feminist Macroeconomics Academy; the USSD platform is used to disseminate key information and for public service delivery reporting by citizens. This allows citizens without access to the internet to participate, in the spirit of leaving no one behind.

Leveraging on the project’s success and impact, For Equality continues to raise awareness and advocating for Gender Responsive Macroeconomic Policies in Malawi; as well as strengthening regional ties in the advocacy for Economic Justice and Rights.
